Combatting Climate Change: Performance

Making Progress

We began reporting our GHG emissions performance in our 2009 Corporate Environmental Report. Since then, we have continued to track, report and strive to improve our performance yearly.

SCOPE 1

Lenovo internal operations and the direct emissions from our facilities.

SCOPE 2

Energy suppliers and their operational emissions which are attributable to our activities.

SCOPE 3

Our supply chain and emissions associated with the production and delivery of goods and services to Lenovo, as well as our customers and the emissions associated with their procurement, use, and disposal of our products.

SCOPE 1

Lenovo internal operations and the direct emissions from our facilities.

During FY 2019/20, Lenovo achieved a 92 percent emissions reduction relative to FY 2009/10, meeting our 2020 targets. The Scope 1 and Scope 2 reductions were accomplished by implementing energy efficiency projects, using solar sources at sites and purchasing renewable energy certificates from renewable projects in the United States, international renewable energy certificates from renewable projects in Brazil, China, India and Mexico, Guarantees of Origin in Europe and carbon offsets in China.

Please note that as part of our improvement efforts, from April 1, 2009, Lenovo transitioned to reporting energy and climate change performance in conjunction with our financial year (FY = Apr 1, through Mar 31). Following this change at the recommendation of our external verifier, Lenovo changed its base year for GHG emissions to FY 2009/10.

In addition, Lenovo started to report location- and market-based Scope 2 emissions from FY 2015/16. Base and consecutive year Scope 2 totals are the same for the location- and market-based methods as product and supplier-specific market-based data were not available in the base year and consecutive years; as such, the location-based results have been used as a proxy for the market-based method.

*At the end of FY 2012/13, Lenovo adjusted its historical CO2e emissions data to account for the acquisition of Medion in Germany and our joint venture with NEC in Japan. At the end of FY 2015/16, Lenovo adjusted historical CO2e emissions to account for acquiring System x and Motorola Mobility.

Lenovo publicly discloses our GHG emissions and climate change strategies through CDP, an independent not-for-profit organization that seeks to prevent dangerous climate change and environmental damage.
