“Built on the latest Lenovo and NVIDIA technology, the fourth generation of HiPerGator will support the next wave of innovation in AI.”

Dr. Erik Deumens

Senior Director of Research Computing, University of Florida Information Technology

Integrating AI into education and research

The University of Florida (UF) is putting AI at the heart of teaching and research with a powerful new supercomputer based on Lenovo, NVIDIA, and AMD technology—delivering AI for Science at scale.

UF’s premier supercomputing cluster, HiPerGator, is integral to advancing academic and research achievements. UF worked with Mark III Systems to deploy HiPerGator 4th Gen, featuring the latest generation of processors, advanced GPUs, high-speed storage and nodes designed for memory-intensive computation. Delivering 17.49 PFLOPS of compute performance[1], the new cluster dramatically accelerates AI training and inference workloads, empowering more UF researchers, faculty, and students to apply AI to their work, with 33 million research requests processed in the past year.

The challenge

  • •       AI education is now integrated into every major and college
  • •       Opportunities in every research field to use AI to push boundaries
  • •       Huge surge in demand for AI required more GPUs

The solution

  • •       HiPerGator comprises 60,000 AMD EPYC™ Server CPU cores and 1,552 NVIDIA GPUs
  • •       AI and HPC expertise from Lenovo and Mark III Systems got the cluster ready for the new academic year

The outcome

  • •       One of the most powerful AI supercomputers in academia in the world
  • •       Enables more users to harness the potential of AI
  • •       Accelerates research workloads, leading to faster insights and breakthroughs
