Lately, there’s been a lot of speculation about Windows 11. So, in this article we’re going to give you the low-down on Windows 11 and how it compares to Windows 10,
In addition to that, we will try to answer other burning questions you might have about Windows 11. So, let’s first start by looking at: What is Microsoft Windows 11?
Windows 11 is the next major version of the Windows operating system (OS) that Microsoft plans to release this year. The launch of this OS marks exactly six years since the company last released a new version of windows. Microsoft has not released another version of Windows for quite some time because Windows 10 was a continuously updated operating system.
Windows 10 received feature updates bi-annually instead of after two or three years, like in the previous versions. The updates added new features to the OS and sometimes caused larger changes.
As a consumer, you have many looming questions about Windows 11 and what it means for you and your PC. Below Microsoft answers those questions and more.
Windows 11 has all the power and security of Windows 10 with a redesigned and refreshed look. It also comes with new tools, sounds, and apps. Every detail has been considered. All of it comes together to bring you a refreshing experience on your PC.
PCs with Windows 11 pre-installed will be available later this year.
It depends! Many different manufacturers will offer a variety of devices that will run Windows 11. All at different price points.
PCs that come with Windows 11 pre-installed will be available from a broad selection of retailers later this year. Details to come.
If your accessories worked with Windows 10 and meet the Windows 11 requirements, they should work with Windows 11. If you want to be sure, please check with your accessory manufacturer.
Most Windows 10 PCs currently being sold will be able to upgrade to Windows 11. For the PC to be able to upgrade to Windows 11, it must meet the minimum hardware specifications and specific hardware is required for some features. The upgrade rollout plan is still being finalized but is scheduled to begin late in 2021 and continue into 2022. Specific timing will vary by device.
There are a few ways to find out. If you’re currently shopping for a new PC look for “Free upgrade to New Windows” on the fact tag. You can also ask your retail sales professional to confirm.
If your existing Windows 10 PC is running the most current version of Windows 10 and meets the minimum hardware specifications it will be able to upgrade to Windows 11. The upgrade rollout plan is still being finalized, but for most devices already in use today, we expect it to be ready sometime in early 2022. Not all Windows 10 PCs that are eligible to upgrade to Windows 11 will be offered to upgrade at the same time. To see if your PC is eligible to upgrade, download the PC Health Check app. Once the upgrade rollout has started, you can check if it is ready for your device by going to Settings/Windows Updates.
The minimum hardware requirements are available at the Microsoft Windows 11 specifications page.
If you’d like to see if your current PC meets the minimum requirements, you can download the PC Health Check app.
Yes! Windows 10 continues to be a great version of Windows. We have committed to supporting Windows 10 through October 14, 2025.
Upgrades to Windows 11 will begin to roll out late in 2021 and continue into 2022. During this time, we will be doing some behind the scenes testing and validating for your specific PC. Windows Update will provide an indication if and when your PC is eligible. You can check to see by going to Settings/Windows Update.
It’s free. But only Windows 10 PCs that are running the most current version of Windows 10 and meet the minimum hardware specifications will be able to upgrade. You can check to see if you have the latest updates for Windows 10 in Settings/Windows Update.
An update can consist of bug and security fixes and new features in a version of Windows. They tend to roll out throughout the year. An upgrade is when you change versions, for example moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11. Or moving editions from Windows Home to Windows Pro.
The free upgrade offer does not have a specific end date for eligible systems. However, Microsoft reserves the right to eventually end support for the free offer. This end date will be no sooner than one year from general availability.
Yes. You do not have to upgrade to Windows 11. We will continue to support Windows 10 until October 14, 2025.
No. New Windows and Windows 10 require approximately the same amount of disk space. During the upgrade process, however, extra space is required. Windows will clean up this extra disk space about ten days after the upgrade is complete.
Windows 11 is the newest version of Windows. However, we will continue to support Windows 10 until October of 2025.
PCs with Windows 11 pre-installed will be available later this year.
PCs with Windows 11 will be available from a broad selection of retailers and our partners later this year. More details will be coming soon.
Most devices available for purchase now will be upgradeable to Windows 11. Look for devices that indicate that they are eligible for the upgrade. You can also ask your retail sales professional or the PC manufacturer (OEM) to confirm. Please note, after Windows 11 is released, Windows Update will confirm when the free upgrade is available for your PC. ISP fees may apply for any upgrade occurring in locations with metered internet.
Windows 11 offers new productivity features and functionality designed to meet the challenges of the hybrid world, with a completely refreshed look and feel that helps you get more done with less stress. Learn more about what’s new at Lenovo.com.
We’ll send you a notification once your eligible PC has been tested and validated for the free upgrade. Or you can go to Windows Update and see for yourself. Please note that a significant download is required to complete this upgrade. ISP fees may apply in areas where the internet is metered.
The free upgrade offer does not have a specific end date for eligible systems. While Microsoft reserves the right to eventually end support for the free offer, it wouldn’t be until at least one year after General Availability (the date when Windows 11 first becomes available to the public).
The upgrade to Windows 11 is for the same edition as you have on your Windows 10 device. Devices with Windows 10 Pro installed will be upgraded to Windows 11 Pro. Devices running Windows 10 Enterprise will upgrade to Windows 11 Enterprise. Windows 11 Pro will not offer Windows 11 Pro in S mode, so you will need to switch out of S mode to upgrade.
Yes, once you have upgraded to Windows 11, you have 10 days to utilize the rollback function to move back to Windows 10 while keeping files and data that you brought along with you. After that 10-day period, you will need to back up your data and do a “clean install” to move back to Windows 10.
An update is a change within a version of a Windows product. For example, moving from Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update) to Windows 10, version 20H2 (the Windows 10 October 2020 Update). An upgrade is when you change OS versions, for example moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11, or when you upgrade to a higher edition within the same OS version (e.g., Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro).
All devices that meet the minimum specification will be eligible for the upgrade to Windows 11. Most eligible Windows 10 PCs will be clearly marked with a tag.
Yes. You can upgrade via the Windows Update section in Settings if you originally declined the offer.
By default, all your files and data will transfer. However, Microsoft recommends backing up your files before installation.
Most software and accessories that worked with Windows 10 are expected to work with Windows 11. Check with your software publisher or accessory manufacturer for specific details on your products.
Yes, Microsoft is committed to ensuring your applications work on the latest versions of our software and Windows 11 has been built with compatibility in mind.
