Aim for at least 16GB of RAM, but ideally 32GB or more. This will enable your computer to run multiple applications and process large video files without slowing down.
Desktops are generally more powerful and customizable than laptops, but if you need to be mobile, a laptop may be the better choice.
A graphics card is essential for video editing. Choose a high-end dedicated graphics card to ensure smooth video playback and rendering.
A solid-state drive (SSD) is preferable because it's faster and more reliable than a traditional hard drive. However, if you need more storage capacity, you may want to consider a hybrid drive.
Aim for a monitor with a high resolution of at least 1080p, good color reproduction, and a size that fits your desk and viewing distance.
A mouse with adjustable sensitivity and precision will help you work more efficiently when editing video.
While a touch screen can be helpful, it's not essential for video editing. Instead, prioritize a high-quality monitor and peripherals such as a mouse and keyboard.
A keyboard with programmable keys and good tactile feedback can speed up your workflow in video editing.
You'll need a large amount of storage capacity for video editing. Aim for at least 1TB and consider adding external storage for backups.
A UPS can protect your computer and files from power surges and outages, which can damage hardware and corrupt data. It's a good investment if you're editing video professionally.
Look for studio monitors or other high-quality speakers that provide accurate sound reproduction. Avoid using consumer-grade speakers for video editing.
Look for headphones designed for studio use, with over-ear, closed-back earcups for great sound isolation and accuracy.
The microphone you choose will depend on the type of video production you're doing. Look for a condenser microphone for most video applications.
While it can be helpful to have a built-in card reader, it's not essential for video editing. External card readers are affordable and convenient.
Look for a quiet but efficient cooling system to reduce noise and avoid overheating during long video-editing sessions.
You'll need a video-editing software such as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro, and possibly other software such as After Effects or Photoshop.
Yes, a desktop computer can be used for live video streaming, but it requires proper planning and setup to ensure stability and reliability.
Choose a desktop with a strong warranty and robust technical support to protect your investment and ensure that any technical issues are promptly addressed.

Choosing the best desktop for video editing
When looking for a good computer for video editing, you need to make sure your setup will be able to handle what you’re throwing at it. Video editing requires certain specifications for the best outcome.
Rendering high resolution video in 4K and 8K videos through software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, VEGAS Pro 9, or really any video editing software will be taxing on your rig. It’ll eat up RAM, and you’ll be waiting an eternity waiting for your video to finally finish if you choose poorly.
It’s an investment you’re making into not only your craft but also your personal and professional development. So picking the right video editing computer is critical in ensuring you meet your goals.
Don’t worry, though. We’re here to help. We’ll cover some of the key features you need to look at when shopping around for a desktop computer you can use for video editing (from most important to least):
The processor (CPU)
Honestly, RAM could take the top spot, but everyone knows the CPU is the “brain” of the computer. For serious video editing, you need a strong processor. Generally, you can tell how powerful a CPU is by how many cores it has. For example, a quad-core processor is much stronger than a dual-core processor.
There are two names that dominate the CPU sphere: Intel and AMD. However, most will agree AMD stands on top by offering the fastest, best-valued high-end CPUs. With that said, AMD should be your choice when looking for a good PC for video editing.
RAM
Random access memory or RAM is how your PC “remembers” what it’s doing. It stores temporary data while the CPU processes it to make the magic on the screen happen. Keeping things simple, more RAM means your computer can handle more processes at one time without slowing down or getting overworked.
Trying to play video clips, apply visuals and sound effects, and background music uses RAM to make things happen seamlessly. If there isn’t enough, you’ll deal with video lag and other issues while working on your projects.
Avoiding this requires you to invest in enough RAM. Working 1080p will be fine with around 32GB. However, if you’re looking for a desktop computer for video editing that can put out 4K resolution without issue, you’ll at least 64GB.
Storage Capacity
If you’ve ever downloaded a 4K movie, you know they will gobble up gigabytes on your hard drive. That’s why having enough storage capacity falls number 3 here. You’ll want to invest in an SSD or solid-state drive which offers quicker speeds and read/write times.
Even then, you might still need to think about an external storage solution because a video editor will never have enough storage space. And don’t forget to buy one that can be used for backing up finished projects. Trust us, you don’t want all your hard work disappearing.
Graphics Card (GPU)
Normally, you think GPUs are only for gamers and cryptocurrency miners. However, video editing software can take advantage of the extra horsepower to make for a smoother rendering process.
Luckily, you don’t need to spend on premium GPUs since more affordable models still offer great benefits.
For GPUs, there are two big players here too. This time it’s Nvidia and AMD. We’d say Nvidia takes the edge with its GeForce series. Find a video editing PC with a nice mid-range Nvidia GPU, and you’ll be more than happy with your purchase.
The Monitor
Alright, the monitor isn’t mission-critical to having the best desktop computer for video editing, but it can make a difference in your workflow and have an impact on the final product. If you are shooting videos in 4K, then you will need to edit them on a 4K screen for best results.
Monitors that display more vibrant, accurate colors will help you meticulously judge the color while you’re editing. And don’t forget about the dynamic contrast levels offered by HDR, which will assist in balancing whites and blacks during the editing process.
Finally, if you’re looking for added productivity and organization, then adding a second monitor will give you more real estate to work with.
Whatever monitor you choose, make sure it has the image quality to bring the best out of your work.
