A mechanical keyboard is a type of keyboard that uses individual mechanical switches under each keycap. These switches provide distinct tactile feedback and an audible click when pressed. Unlike membrane keyboards, which use a rubber dome to register keystrokes, mechanical keyboards offer a more satisfying and responsive typing experience for most users.

Using a mechanical keyboard can enhance your typing and gaming experience. The tactile feedback and audible click of the keys may help you type with more precision and speed. Additionally, mechanical keyboards are known for their durability, as the switches have a longer lifespan compared to rubber dome keyboards.
Unlike membrane keyboards, mechanical keyboards have individual switches under each key. This design makes mechanical keyboards more reliable and durable, as each keypress is registered independently. Membrane keyboards, in contrast, use a rubber dome that can wear out over time, leading to inconsistent key registration.
No, different mechanical keyboards use various types of switches, each offering a different typing experience. Common switch types include Cherry MX, Kailh, and Gateron. These switches come in different variations, such as linear, tactile, and clicky, providing a range of options to suit your personal preference.
There are three main types of mechanical switches: linear, tactile, and clicky. Linear switches have a smooth keystroke without any tactile bump or audible click. Tactile switches have a slight bump when you press them, providing feedback to indicate the keystroke has been registered. Clicky switches have both a tactile bump and an audible click, making them highly satisfying for some typists.
Choosing the right switch depends on your typing style and preferences. If you prefer a smooth and silent typing experience, linear switches might be the best fit. If you enjoy feeling the keystrokes with a gentle bump, tactile switches are a good choice. And if you want distinct tactile feedback and audible click, clicky switches will give you that satisfying typing sound.
Yes, some mechanical keyboards allow keycap customisation. Keycaps can be easily removed and replaced with different styles, materials, or colours. This allows you to personalise your keyboard and even improve its ergonomics by using keycaps with different profiles or designs.
Mechanical keyboards can be louder than membrane keyboards due to the audible click produced by models with clicky switches. However, not all mechanical switches are loud. Linear switches are generally the quietest, while tactile switches produce a subtle sound. If you're concerned about noise, look for mechanical keyboards with dampeners or switches specifically designed for quieter operation.
Absolutely. Many gamers prefer mechanical keyboards for their responsiveness and tactile feedback. The distinct feedback of mechanical switches can help you register keystrokes more accurately and quickly during intense gameplay. Additionally, some mechanical keyboards offer features specifically tailored for gaming, such as customisable red, green blue (RGB) lighting and programmable macros.
While mechanical keyboards are popular among professionals and keyboard enthusiasts, they can be enjoyed by anyone who wants a more satisfying typing experience. Whether you're a writer, programmer, gamer, or casual computer user, a mechanical keyboard can add a touch of comfort and enjoyment to your daily tasks.
Mechanical keyboards can potentially improve your typing speed and accuracy. The tactile feedback from the switches helps some users develop a better sense of keystroke registration, leading to fewer errors and increased typing speed over time. However, individual results may vary depending on typing technique.
Yes, you can use a mechanical keyboard with a laptop or tablet-provided it has a universal serial bus (USB), Bluetooth®, or similar connectivity. Most mechanical keyboards come with a detachable USB cable, allowing you to connect them to a variety of devices. Some compact mechanical keyboards are designed specifically for portability, making them ideal for use with laptops and tablets on the go.
Cleaning and maintaining a mechanical keyboard will help keep it in optimal condition and prolong its lifespan. To clean your keyboard, some simple steps include, first, unplug the keyboard from your computer. Next, use a soft brush, microfiber cloth, or compressed air to gently remove dust and debris from the surface of the keyboard, paying special attention to the gaps between keys. For a more thorough cleaning, carefully remove the keycaps using a keycap puller or a flat tool. Be gentle to avoid damaging the key switches or stems. Once the keycaps are removed, clean the exposed surface with a soft brush or compressed air to remove any remaining dust and debris. Rinse the keycaps thoroughly and let them air dry completely before reattaching them to the keyboard.
While mechanical keyboards are primarily designed for use with computers, some gaming consoles, like PlayStation and Xbox, offer limited support for keyboard and mouse input. However, console compatibility can vary, so it's essential to check the specific console's documentation or firmware updates to see if mechanical keyboards are supported.
Yes, many mechanical keyboards offer programmable macros, which allow you to assign complex sequences of keystrokes or actions to a single key. This can be particularly useful for gamers or professionals who need to automate repetitive tasks. Check the keyboard's documentation or accompanying software to learn how to program macros.
Yes, wireless mechanical keyboards are available, offering the convenience of a cable-free setup. These keyboards typically use Bluetooth® connectivity and may come with rechargeable batteries. Keep in mind that wireless keyboards typically have slightly higher latency compared to their wired counterparts, although the difference is usually negligible for most users.
Absolutely. Mechanical keyboards are popular among programmers due to their tactile feedback and durability. For some users, the responsive switches help reduce typing errors and improve coding speed and accuracy. Additionally, programmable macros on some mechanical keyboards can be handy for assigning frequently used code snippets or shortcuts.
Mechanical Keyboards
The more you use your computer, the more important the quality and comfort of your setup becomes. That is why gamers, programmers, and writers alike have taken to using the latest mechanical keyboards.
Mechanical keyboards can be more efficient, faster to use, and easier on your hands and posture over an extended period. As you consider the different options available from Lenovo, use this guide to figure out the features that are most important to you.
You will want to start by deciding what type of mechanical keyboard you want. Each category has a different feel and may be better suited for certain purposes above others, such as gaming or programming.
Different Types of Mechanical Keyboards at Lenovo
● Linear Switch Mechanical Keyboards
Keyboards that use a linear switch are the most simple and fastest mechanical keyboards available. Because of this, these are the most popular mechanical keyboards for gaming. Gamers find they can use the keys faster and more smoothly compared to the other two types of mechanical keys available.
In a linear switch keyboard, you simply press down on the key until it hits the “bottom” of the keyboard. What makes this type of keyboard fast is that there is a very short distance you need to press down when you hit a key. Also, the tops of the keys are flat, allowing your fingers to move smoothly across the surface.
You will also notice that mechanical keys have different colors under the keycaps (keycaps are the covers with the letters, numbers, or commands over the key). Those colors just show different mechanical specs, so the keys of pink mechanical keyboards will be different from blue or red keys.
● Tactile Mechanical Keyboards
Those who are looking for a quiet typing experience are going to want to look at tactile mechanical keyboards. Of the three main keyboard switch types, these are definitely the quietest mechanical keyboards available.
Tactile keyboards are actually mechanically very similar to linear keys. Both keyboards run by pressing the keys straight down to type and input commands. The difference, though, is that tactile keys are designed to give feedback to your fingers before reaching all the way to the bottom. This feedback is felt as a “bump.”
The bump is actually what makes tactile keys so quiet. Since you have that feedback before pressing all the way down, there’s no need to continue pressing to the bottom. Those clicking sounds from a keyboard come from linear keys hitting the bottom. Since you don’t need to go down all the way on tactile keyboards, there’s less noise when typing.
● Clicky Mechanical Keyboards
There’s no surprise where the name for clicky mechanical keyboards comes from. Clicky keyboards make a clicking sound every time you press down on a key. Depending on who you talk to, these keyboards can be lot of fun to use.
In terms of how they work, keyboards are almost mechanically the same as tactile keyboards. When you press down on a key, you feel a bump about halfway through the press. The reason that this type of keyboard is not quite like tactile keys is because it is designed to make a clicking noise when the key hits that bump.
People like the added feedback and responsiveness they get from mechanical keyboards. The noise can also be useful for beginning typists as they learn how to make their way around the keyboard.
What to Look for In a Mechanical Keyboard
● Keyboard Sizes and Layouts
Once you decide on the mechanical switch type that you want for your keyboard, the size and layout of it is one of the more important features. The size of the mechanical keyboard is actually what determines how the keys are laid out, and whether or not certain keys are included.
For example, if you want to have a number pad on your keyboard then you’ll need to go for a larger size. There are few commonly found standard sizes to consider when looking at mechanical keyboards. Keyboard sizes are referred to by percentages, so a keyboard can be 60-percent or 75-percent of a full size keyboard.
Funny enough, mechanical keyboards 60 percent size are considered a normal size keyboard. This size of keyboard has what’s considered to be a normal keyboard layout, without the extra key clusters like a number pad. Mechanical keyboards 65 percent are very similar but usually have some arrow keys added to the layout.
● Ergonomic Mechanical Keyboards for Comfort, Posture
When people consider using a mechanical keyboard, it’s often to improve the typing experience. This goes beyond the type of mechanical switch the keys use. These mechanical keyboards are designed to be ergonomic to create a more enjoyable typing experience.
Mechanical ergonomic keyboards are designed to put less strain on your hands and wrist while using them. People who type for long periods of time and with heavier force benefit the most from these keyboard designs.
One popular ergonomic style is split mechanical keyboards. Keyboards with this feature actually physically separate in the middle so that you can place one half on each side under your hands. The thought of using a keyboard that’s split in half may be awkward to those who haven’t done it before, but it is ergonomically designed to put your wrists in a more natural position.
● Keyboard Customization and Shortcuts
Depending on how advanced of a mechanical keyboard user you become, you may decide you want to play around with customizing the key commands. While non-mechanical keyboards aren’t able to do this, many mechanical ones give the user the ability to change around what keys do.
There are also mechanical keyboards that have backlighting. All of these allow you to change the colors up on the backlighting which can be fun to do and help you match your aesthetic.
● Construction of The Frame and Keycaps
The frame of mechanical keyboards is what holds everything together. Keyboard frames are commonly made from either plastic or metal. More importantly, frames have different profiles that affect the design of the keyboard. Frames with a higher profile will make the keys flush seem almost flush with the frame. On the other end, frames with lower profiles allow the keys to be almost on top of the frame.
The type of keyboard frame you choose depends largely on the typing experience you want, as with a lot of the other features. You may also want to look at the type of keycaps that a keyboard has. Keycaps are made from different types of plastic that can have a very different feel on the fingertips.

● Gaming Use for The Win
Having the right mechanical keyboards is definitely important for gamers who spend a lot of time using it. When it comes to using a mechanical keyboard for gaming, speed and accuracy are important.
When you really get into gaming, your mechanical keyboard becomes your best friend and makes a big difference in how you perform in the game. In addition to a smooth, fast playing experience, gamers often seek out keyboards that are extra durable to withstand wear from heavier use.
● Programmers and Tech Roles Typing Up the Future
Ergonomic keyboards are a lifesaver for people who work in tech and programming jobs. Computer programmers spend their time writing and editing code at the computer. That kind of work can put lot of strain on the wrists and affect your sitting picture.
Similar to gamers, programmers make use of the split style mechanical keyboard. Once you’ve adapted to that style of typing, split keyboards allow for a natural v-style posture when sitting. People working with code and databases also receive help from quick access to keys on full size mechanical keyboard models.
These ergonomic mechanical keyboards are designed with coders and programmers in mind. Not only do they offer the comfort and durability that make using the computer a much more enjoyable experience, mechanical keyboards can also be customized to different degrees. Programmers may decide to create a layout with shortcuts for commands that they use often.
● Long Work and Typing Hours at The Keyboard
Of course, the people spend lot of their time working at their computer. That’s why mechanical keyboards have become more popular in business in general. Writers also find that the tactile experience you get from a mechanical keyboard makes the writing process more enjoyable and immersive.
Keep in mind that mechanical keyboards can be quite compact and easy to take with you if that’s what you’re looking for. All models over wireless connectivity via Bluetooth and are very lightweight.
Similar to how people use an external monitor for their laptop, people who use their computer throughout the day find that having a keyboard they can place closer to them allows for better posture when working.
