Frequently Ask Questions

What makes the Core i7 a good choice for gaming?

Gaming laptops are among the industry’s most complicated portable systems. The choice of processor is critical – perhaps not as important as the graphics card, RAM volume, built-in cooling features, etc., but still vital for processing and coordinating the game action.

When searching for a gaming laptop with an Intel Core i7 processor, the top-level system specifications will typically describe four specific features of the chip. Let's look at each of these facets and how they affect the laptop’s suitability for playing advanced PC games:

CPU speed: Intel Core i7 CPUs offer fast cycle times, with many models running at 2.5 GHz or higher. Remember that it's the base speed of the processor -- more than the number of cores or threads that has the biggest single impact on feeding consistently

high frame rates to the graphics card.

Turbo Boost: Intel's Turbo Boost feature can automatically lift a Core i7 processor's cycle times to 4.0 GHz or higher. It's a nice option for games that only use one or two cores, as it can speed up those cores while the system (with its other cores relatively inactive) stays cool enough to support the feature.

Core count: The Core i7 CPUs on Lenovo gaming laptops typically have six cores (essentially six processors on a single chip). Most games only utilize one to three cores, but having extra cores helps the laptop perform other chores simultaneously, such as recording/streaming your games or routine PC tasks such as virus scanning.

Cache allotment: Core i7 processors on Lenovo gaming laptops have huge L3 caches of 6 MB to 12 MB. The L3 cache stores frequently accessed data on the CPU itself. It's similar to the RAM that sits on the motherboard, but it’s closer to the processing cores and therefore much faster.

With specs like these, it's easy to see why Core i7 gaming laptops are so powerful. They deliver desktop PC-like gaming performance in easily portable systems you can take anywhere. If you like to play AAA games on the go, there may be no better rig than a Core i7 gaming laptop from Lenovo.

How to make your decision in a gaming processor

What is the right decision for your situation? If you love gaming, there are many things you could be thinking about when it comes to buying a laptop or a PC. With so many options, it can become a bit overwhelming. Before you make the decision on an i7 gaming desktop or laptop, take a look at a few different options and careful considerations.

Which intel processor is best for you?

When it comes to choosing the right option for your gaming needs, most people choose an Intel Core i7 gaming PC build. That is because this is the mid-range option, and it offers a wide range of tools to help you perform at your best during any game.

By comparison, an i3 processor is considered a budget model. While it still performs better than some other processors, it may not provide you with the best experience out there. When it comes to an i5 vs. i7 gaming option, the step-up in cost to an i7 is often worth it because it offers better functionality for things like media-editing, media-creation tasks, and high-end gaming than the i5. You may notice that the i5 is going to perform reliably but that you may have to deal with less overall capability than if you choose the i7 gaming PC bundle instead.

When it comes to the i9 vs. i7 gaming, you see a higher price point with the i9 and more features, and better overall performance. The i9 is going to be a powerful choice, but keep in mind that the i9 is usually best suited for a server or a workstation. In other words, you probably do not need that level of functionality and may not notice a lot of difference in this option over the i7 gaming PC instead.

How can you get a good deal?

If you are looking for i7 gaming laptop deals, chances are good you will find a few. At Lenovo, we provide you with access to the best possible deals available but keep in mind this may change from one day to the next.

One of the best ways to get the power of a top-quality processor but to keep costs low is to check out PC desktop i7 gaming. That is, instead of putting all your money into a laptop, go with a PC instead. Why is that?

Desktops allow you to get far more for your money than you would get for the purchase of a laptop with the same overall processor specs. That means that if you pick up an Intel Core i7 gaming PC, you are likely to spend less on the purchase of it than if you bought a laptop with the same features. More so, there are a lot of opportunities for you to expand as well. With a Core i7 gaming PC, you end up with a lot more room to add more RAM or storage to it. You can also easily change up the graphics card and add more functionality to the system. For those who are true gamers, having the ability to upgrade is a big deal. So, seek out i7 gaming PCs instead of laptops.

The question is, can you get a cheap i7 gaming PC? The answer is yes. Lenovo works to help you get the best pricing available for any type of gaming computer you decide to buy. Keep a few things in mind as you consider the i7 gaming PCs available to you.

You may find that some games will be far more demanding of the processor power and operating system than others.
