Ordinateurs portables Intel® Xeon® de Lenovo : des performances optimales pour les tâches critiques
An Intel® Xeon® laptop isn't for everyone. But those who value Xeon® laptops -- that is, laptops powered by advanced Intel® Xeon® processors -- do so for good reason. With high core counts, fast operating frequencies and support for Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory, Xeon CPUs run some of today's best servers, PCs and laptops. They’re especially prized for work that involves highly sensitive, mission-critical calculations and applications.
Lenovo offers Xeon processors in several of our high performance ThinkPad laptops. You get a top-rated CPU in an easily portable device with great graphics and display options. There's also super-fast Wi-Fi and security features such as discrete Trusted Platform Module (dTPM) encryption and the ThinkShutter camera cover.
To help you shop, we've dedicated this page to Xeon® laptops from Lenovo. Take a look. It's not much of an exaggeration to say these Intel® laptops can "do it all."
When mistakes cost time and money: Intel Xeon laptops from Lenovo
Let's face it. Some tasks are less affected by errors than others. If there's a typo in a business letter, it's easy to identify and fix. But what if the mistake is hidden in the tiniest pieces of system memory? What if a bit that's supposed to be a "1" ends up as a "0" instead? Such errors (called bit-flips or soft memory errors) can be almost impossible for humans to catch -- yet their impact on a software program's results can be enormous.
This is where the Intel Xeon CPU's support for ECC memory is so important. Bit-flips can be countered using specialized ECC RAM modules with extra DRAM chips that prevent such errors, but ECC RAM can't work without help from the processor's memory controller. Intel exposes (turns on) this ECC memory support on its Xeon® processors, making a Xeon® laptop an ideal choice for scientific and financial work where small errors could create outsized problems.
Lenovo’s workstation line is dominated by Intel laptops, with additional models running on the company’s competing high-performance CPU line, the Intel® Core® i series. Like Xeon, the best Core® i processors have high core counts, fast speeds and big caches, along with overclocking that isn't offered on Xeon. In fact, many users prefer Core i workstations, which generally cost less than Xeon models.
Still, a Xeon laptop -- in addition to providing raw power and performance -- can greatly minimize soft data errors that corrupt results and cause unexpected, work-eating system shutdowns. If you're designing bridges, projecting illness rates or figuring complex actuarial tables -- or just want a more crash-limiting laptop in general -- be sure to consider a Lenovo mobile workstation with a Xeon CPU.
Processors
The Intel Xeon line of processors provides powerful, low latency processing power. Due to their large core counts, more cache memory, and support for error-checked memory, the processors are suitable for heavy but mission-critical applications.
The Intel Xeon processor was originally built with workstations, computers, and servers in mind. The large numbers in core counts and size and advanced RAM functionalities give Intel Xeon laptops listed above enough processing power and speed to comfortably handle the most compute-intensive creative applications, from (CAD) computer-aided design to high resolution 8K and 4k video editing, production, and 3D rendering.
The Intel Xeon™ brand, introduced in 1998, now has four families of processors, which include:
Xeon R
Xeon W
Xeon X
Xeon Scalable
Each of the processors was built to handle varying workloads. Since their inception, Xeon processors have been powering servers and workstations. Applications include but are not limited to; cloud computing data centers, industrial manufacturing and data analytics applications, critical military weapons and radar systems applications, and Intelligence-gathering.
Xeon processors can also be found in many consumer-level computers but are highly underutilized. Mobile versions of the latest Xeon processors, the Intel Xeon x5650, have been in mass production. This presents an opportunity to test the powerful processors outside the desktop PC setting. How do Lenovo Intel Xeon workstations compare with the i9? And is it right for you?
Intel® Xeon® Vs Intel® Core™ series
The Intel Core™ series is currently the most popular CPU brand in the global market. This is for a good reason. They are two of the biggest names in high-powered processing, offering advanced processing and impressive computational speeds.
Top-of-the-line Core i9 processors have very strong single-core performance. Intel Core chips are also cheap and offer excellent performance for a limited number of applications.
Here are the top advantages of Intel® Xeon® processors over the Intel® Core™ series.
ECC memory prevents soft memory errors when mission Critical Data is at stake.
Intel® Xeon® processors come with out-of-the-box support for ECC memory. Error-correcting code (ECC) protects your system from potential crashes due to soft errors.
ECC automatically carries out error checking and correction. ECC works by adding an extra chip to the RAM board that error checks the other eight chips. ECC memory stops data corruption at the very source.
What is a soft error? The smallest unit of data is called a “bit” each bit is a corresponding electrical pulse represented by 1 and 0. Soft errors occur when a CPU reads the data differently than intended. Soft errors occur because of the following reasons:
Tiny spikes in electricity flow that inadvertently change the value of bits.
Electromagnetic interference.
Soft errors can harm your data in many different ways and may have devastating effects on business-critical or sensitive data.
Higher Core Count for multiple processes.
The Intel Xeon W and X series have a high maximum core count. Xeon CPUs offer very high core counts, enabling the processor to divide up processes to its many cores, enhancing their computational power. A high core count enables a higher number of instructions per second to be performed by the processor.
As a professional, you most likely have a heavily threaded workflow. Many enterprise applications like Machine Learning or Computational Dynamics and simulations benefit from as many CPU cores as they can get. Intel Xeon processors are perfect for you.
The Intel Xeon x5660 processor with six core and 12 threads and 12 MB Intel® Smart Cache can handle any large enterprise software in need of immense processing power. Intel Xeon W and Intel Xeon x CPUs have powerful cores with bus speeds of up to 6.4 GT/s.
Higher performance saves time and money
Intel Xeon processors are known to handle heavy workloads in the professional industry. Large-scale operations need to be done at high speeds. Workstation laptops are often used to perform heavy multitasking, which naturally needs a very fast CPU. Xeon X’s memory bandwidth allows the capabilities of the processors to be fully unlocked, although the processor itself cannot be overclocked.
A single core AMD CPU or Intel Core processor’s performance is bottlenecked by its time to communicate with cache and slow RAM. Intel Core i9 and many single-core processors waste runtime waiting for memory access results.
As an improvement to the performance of their workstation laptops, Intel and Lenovo, in partnership, have been releasing more multi-core machines based on Intel Xeon W, Intel nuc Xeon, Intel new Xeon 2017 and the Intel Xeon line of processors. A CPU that offers multiple cores, Xeon vs i9, always performs significantly better than a single-core CPU of the same speed.
Large CPU cache, Intel Xeon chips have minimal lag. intel xeon w
A larger CPU cache means a significantly larger portion of program data can be stored on the high-speed L3 cache near the CPU, which keeps the CPU from accessing the slower RAM. Having a higher memory increases the chances of cache hit and minimizes cache miss. Intel Core and AMD CPUs Xeon targeted for consumer markets have closed the gap in recent years, but Intel Xeon processors have more than double the cache of top i7 and i9 mobile chips at almost 50 MB of cache.
Support for larger RAM for the modern professional workflow.
When comparing Intel Core and Intel Xeon processors for workstations, Intel Xeon processors have better support for more RAM. Intel Xeon R and W chips are built ground up to support rapid and persistent memory access. The Xeon Chips on laptops can also maximize RAM capabilities through high read and write speeds. Larger Ram on Intel Xeon chips on Lenovo workstations means a smoother workflow.
