For those who work with geospatial data, or GIS, you already know how labor-intensive the work can be. As a result, you need a computer that can handle the same type of workload. For those who are working in this field, it is critical to have a laptop that can handle the processing necessary. A typical laptop simply is not enough. The best laptop for GIS is one that is capable of performing at a high level on a consistent basis. It also has to provide a wide level of features to ensure that you do not have slowdowns that cost you time.

Lenovo offers a range of laptops that can meet the demands of GIS. The key is to know what to look for when purchasing them. Take a closer look at some of the most important features in these computer systems to determine which one is right for the work you are doing.

Importance of a GIS Laptop or Computer

Those who use ArcGIS and GIS software need their computer system to handle a lot of data at one time. These types of software programs are very resource intensive, which means they require your laptop or computer to perform a number of tasks in a small amount of time.

Those that purchase a budget model computer system to do this are unlikely to get the results they need. In many cases, an older computer may be a problem as well. These systems often result in a lot of wasted time as you wait for the screen to reload after each of the steps. In addition, geoprocessing can take a lot of time itself.

For this reason, the best laptop for GIS is going to provide the highest level of functionality possible. That often includes a laptop that can handle a lot of data at one time.

 Computer or Laptop

One of the first decisions you need to make is whether a laptop or a computer desktop is a better option for you. It is possible to get a laptop for geospatial use. However, there are core benefits to purchasing a computer instead. A computer is going to have more powerful components to it for the investment made in it. For example, a computer desktop tower may have a lot more performance features, such as a higher processor, while costing less than the same processor in a laptop.

The key here is to consider the type of work you are doing. If you are working in a stationary area, which most people in GIS are doing, then a computer desktop works well and can help you to get more of the performance features you need for less. However, if you need flexibility in where and how you work, a GIS laptop may be the better option for you.

The other key concern is expandability. Computer desktops tend to have more room to allow you to expand them, including adding more memory to them. That can prove necessary as your work becomes more complex. Laptops may have some limitations in this because of their size and overall build.

Lenovo offers both. Choose what works for the specific type of work you are doing. Be sure to focus on the specs of any workstation or laptop that you purchase for this need.

Key Features of Workstation Laptops for GIS

Though there are a lot of specifics to consider about the work you do, there are generally a few key things to look for when it comes to buying a high performance laptop like this. Be sure that you understand the type of software you are using in particular and any demands it has. Then, consider how you can get the right tools for the job.

In general, a workstation or laptop for GIS needs to be faster and more powerful than any other system. As a result, it is typically essential to focus on the following components.

Video cards

One of the most important factors that play a role in the function of geospatial software is video graphics. There is a lot of demand on the system for this, and as a result, you need a very good video card. It is often best to compare several products to find the best you can afford. A good video card, or graphics card, is going to be able to generate outstanding images. Their job is to output the images in the system and transmit them to the display. This is sometimes referred to as a GPU or graphical processing unit.

In all cases, take some time to compare the graphics card that is in the workstation or laptop you plan to buy. Look at the brand and be sure that you are purchasing the latest generation model whenever possible. That is going to help you to get the very best level of performance on a consistent basis.

Sometimes, it is best to purchase a graphics card that is dedicated. That is one that can be focused on the tasks at hand. When possible, look for one that is not built into the mainboard. That is not always possible in a GIS laptop, though. When possible, this can enhance gameplay to the next level.

RAM

The best high performance laptop or pc is going to be able to produce an intense amount of function for you. To do that, it needs to have a large amount of RAM or memory. A basic level of RAM is generally around 8 G for this type of work. However, it may be possible to upgrade this to the next level and get as much as 16 GB. The key here is that you purchase as much as possible since this component plays a big role in the performance of the system.

If you are looking to save money, you could go with a lower amount of RAM and then upgrade later if you need to. Just be sure the system you buy allows for that type of upgrade. Some laptops do not have the room to allow for this.

Processor

The best GIS computer is one that can perform for you at the very best level. To do that, it needs a powerful processor. You will find a wide range of options available, but depending on the amount of work you are doing, it may be helpful to have a processor that is the latest generation and one that is built for at least gaming.

There are generally two options here. One of the AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 Pro line up, or you can choose an Intel i5 or better. These processors are going to be able to take on the hard work of geospatial software. You may find these high-performance laptop products are also a great choice when you need to use more than one software program at a time.

If you are going to spend some extra money on a laptop or a pc for GIS, put it into a higher performing processor. In many cases, the more performance you get from this, the faster your system can work, and that means less time for you to wait around for results.

Other features

From here, there are a few other things that can be important to you. For example, most systems run on Windows because of how adaptable it is for this field. You also want to consider the amount of storage you have. Storage is quite important within the system most of the time – look for 256 GB or higher. However, you can also add more storage later if you need it through an external hard drive.

Also, think about the display. A smaller laptop may be okay for on-the-go travel, but for those that are sitting down and processing a lot of information at once, it may be necessary to consider an upgrade. A larger screen for a laptop or a desktop is going to give you more room to move. In all situations, the best GIS computer is one that fits the way you like to work – so ensure the display quality is good, you have enough room for the work you are doing, and that the overall brand is one you trust.

A Key Concern

If you are purchasing a GIS system, you may turn to a local sales professional and ask for help. That could be a very bad mistake. Most of the time, companies do not have a lot of experience with GIS. They do not know what it is or how it works. That means they may have a very difficult time recommending a solution for you.

In some cases, you can shop for a graphic intensive gaming system and get a good overall product. However, it is often best to stick with Lenovo, where we have built laptops and workstations designed specifically for GIS. That may mean you get what you need and get it for a fraction of the cost.
