Looking for PC Audio Advice

Music
Tech & Gadgets

Anyone with experience hooking up an electric guitar through their desktop PC? Haven't played guitar for years and looking to take it back up again. I want to pass the electric guitar through my pc, apply live guitar effects and output to speakers alongside a backing track played from the pc so I can play along.

However:

  • I don't have a DAW. Can anyone recommend a free or cheap DAW that would be good for this? And any good effects plugins you recommend?

  • How do I minimise latency? I don't want the output to lag behind what I'm playing.

  • I have a BandLab Link Digital USB audio interface that takes in 1/4" jack and outputs to USB. Is that any good for this task?

  • I don't have a dedicated soundcard and am currently outputting audio through the GPU via HDMI cable to a soundbar but I assume this is bad for latency. Should I be outputting audio from the motherboard outputs to avoid the GPU? And should I get a dedicated speaker for output? I'd really prefer the output through the soundbar's 5.1 surround speakers (even if the guitar is mono) but I'm worried GPU -> soundbar -> wireless speakers is going to be far too laggy.

How do you set up? Any advice appreciated 😊

Audacity 4 Beta 2

Discussion/Other
Entertainment

I forgot to mention that I was recently dabbling around with the latest beta of Audacity, the free audio editing app for Windows, MacOS, Linux. The UI received a huge update and is really nice to use. I only had one or two issues with the beta, but it worked pretty well overall. I think it's a nice improvement over the previous version. I was using it on Fedora 44 KDE Plasma Linux on my Lenovo ThinkPad (I use a Win11 icon theme - ironic, I know).

Favorite Budget Headphones?

I recently got a pair of Cadenza II IEMs and I am loving them. They are pretty cheap <$50, and sound great! What is your favorite pair of budget headphones or IEMs?

Does dac really make a difference?

While the Philips SHP9500 are still a good pick, especially if you don't care about bass or if you're using it primarily as gaming headphones (for the soundstage) they were a lot better ~10 years ago when there wasn't a whole lot of competition in the price range. I personally haven't been in that budget bracket recently though, so I'm not familiar with any alternatives.

If you want budget-budget, the Koss KSC75s and KPH40s are a good pick. The KSC75 might be a little uncomfortable unless you mod a headband to it since it's over ear.

For my reallife job we use a Jabra headset with mic and it works pretty good. If you want a more professional style for my personal use I use a Blue Yeti Mic

Looking for free/open source and unlimited TTS tools

Hey All!

I've got a project that I need a good bit of text spoken and I wanted to see if there were any free/open source Text-to-Speech options out there? - Preferably tools that don't have limits on how much text can be converted per day.

Also I feel like there are AI tools as well and wouldn't mind some thoughts on going down that road.

Thanks for any and all help!

Going to any concerts or performances?

Music
Music & Audio

I'm curious to see if anyone is planning on going to concerts this summer or other similar events? My wife and I looked at a bunch but the prices are so out of control that it's kind of rediculous. I would LOVE to see Rush in Dallas, but the tix are about $300 minimum each. The last show I went to, although it was quite a while back, was about $40. Most comedy shows for well know comedians are even more than that. I wish there was something that could be done to make shows more affordable but I guess the promoters and ticket sales are all wanting their piece of the pie. Anyone have any plans or maybe sticking to more small venues?

There are a ton of good movie soundtrack and the celtic circle really got a good mix too. Series like Supernatural or just movie soundtracks are easy for people to sing along to and many people know them.

When creating content, do you ever consider producing multichannel works that aren’t in stereo?

Discussion/Other
Music & Audio

Most users still use mono or stereo devices, and most content distribution platforms only support stereo.

I use a 7.1-channel system and have tried using 7.1-channel audio for live streams and videos. But as mentioned above, for most people, this is still uncharted territory.

In that case, have you ever considered or tried offering a superior audio experience to a select few? I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

3

No, I have never considered creating content producing multichannel that are not in stereo.

Spencer

It's definitely extra work and there are some DAWs that will approximate it for you and then you fine-tune it the rest of the way. It's definitely worth practicing and keeping in your repertoire. If you have a client that's looking for a particular effect, you'll be able to demo and create for them.

I picked up the Creative Labs Sound Blaster GS3 Compact Gaming Soundbar with SuperWide Technology for free from Lenovo after using MLR points to use with one of my laptops and it's been pretty decent. I also picked up the Creative Labs Pebble Desktop Speakers to use with one of my desktops and it was also surprising pretty decent as well.

Plugins for Linux-based Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) on the Rise 🚀

Music
Music & Audio

A DAW without a collection of useful plugins for virtual instruments and effects is quite limited. In the past, this has been a major drawback for using Linux in music production. However, times are changing and a growing community of Linux DAW users have been making a concerted effort to get plugin developers to support the Linux platform... and it's working. As of now, the Linux DAW Web page boasts approximately 950 plugins, a significant increase from just a few months ago... and many of them are free.

Any good free VST plugin for distortion guitar?

I've had good luck with Voxengo Boogex - nice warm tone and not overly expensive to get set up. ANy in particular that you didn't like?

Tools for separating out components of a song?

Music & Audio

Looking for tools that will separate out the pieces of a song (ex. the vocals)

I'd like to separate a song into parts that I could then edit but I don't know where to start. I'm also not sure if this is in standard music software or if it would require AI? Any advice to get started?

What kind of free tools exist out there or is my task a paid one?

Thanks in advance for any advice and wisdom you care to pass along!
