Mechanical Keyboards
Mechanical Keyboards
The more you use your computer, the more important the quality and comfort of your setup becomes. That is why gamers, programmers, and writers alike have taken to using the latest mechanical keyboards.
Mechanical keyboards can be more efficient, faster to use, and easier on your hands and posture over an extended period. As you consider the different options available from Lenovo, use this guide to figure out the features that are most important to you.
You will want to start by deciding what type of mechanical keyboard you want. Each category has a different feel and may be better suited for certain purposes above others, such as gaming or programming.
Different Types of Mechanical Keyboards at Lenovo
● Linear Switch Mechanical Keyboards
Keyboards that use a linear switch are the most simple and fastest mechanical keyboards available. Because of this, these are the most popular mechanical keyboards for gaming. Gamers find they can use the keys faster and more smoothly compared to the other two types of mechanical keys available.
In a linear switch keyboard, you simply press down on the key until it hits the “bottom” of the keyboard. What makes this type of keyboard fast is that there is a very short distance you need to press down when you hit a key. Also, the tops of the keys are flat, allowing your fingers to move smoothly across the surface.
You will also notice that mechanical keys have different colors under the keycaps (keycaps are the covers with the letters, numbers, or commands over the key). Those colors just show different mechanical specs, so the keys of pink mechanical keyboards will be different from blue or red keys.
● Tactile Mechanical Keyboards
Those who are looking for a quiet typing experience are going to want to look at tactile mechanical keyboards. Of the three main keyboard switch types, these are definitely the quietest mechanical keyboards available.
Tactile keyboards are actually mechanically very similar to linear keys. Both keyboards run by pressing the keys straight down to type and input commands. The difference, though, is that tactile keys are designed to give feedback to your fingers before reaching all the way to the bottom. This feedback is felt as a “bump.”
The bump is actually what makes tactile keys so quiet. Since you have that feedback before pressing all the way down, there’s no need to continue pressing to the bottom. Those clicking sounds from a keyboard come from linear keys hitting the bottom. Since you don’t need to go down all the way on tactile keyboards, there’s less noise when typing.
● Clicky Mechanical Keyboards
There’s no surprise where the name for clicky mechanical keyboards comes from. Clicky keyboards make a clicking sound every time you press down on a key. Depending on who you talk to, these keyboards can be lot of fun to use.
In terms of how they work, keyboards are almost mechanically the same as tactile keyboards. When you press down on a key, you feel a bump about halfway through the press. The reason that this type of keyboard is not quite like tactile keys is because it is designed to make a clicking noise when the key hits that bump.
People like the added feedback and responsiveness they get from mechanical keyboards. The noise can also be useful for beginning typists as they learn how to make their way around the keyboard.
What to Look for In a Mechanical Keyboard
● Keyboard Sizes and Layouts
Once you decide on the mechanical switch type that you want for your keyboard, the size and layout of it is one of the more important features. The size of the mechanical keyboard is actually what determines how the keys are laid out, and whether or not certain keys are included.
For example, if you want to have a number pad on your keyboard then you’ll need to go for a larger size. There are few commonly found standard sizes to consider when looking at mechanical keyboards. Keyboard sizes are referred to by percentages, so a keyboard can be 60-percent or 75-percent of a full size keyboard.
Funny enough, mechanical keyboards 60 percent size are considered a normal size keyboard. This size of keyboard has what’s considered to be a normal keyboard layout, without the extra key clusters like a number pad. Mechanical keyboards 65 percent are very similar but usually have some arrow keys added to the layout.
● Ergonomic Mechanical Keyboards for Comfort, Posture
When people consider using a mechanical keyboard, it’s often to improve the typing experience. This goes beyond the type of mechanical switch the keys use. These mechanical keyboards are designed to be ergonomic to create a more enjoyable typing experience.
Mechanical ergonomic keyboards are designed to put less strain on your hands and wrist while using them. People who type for long periods of time and with heavier force benefit the most from these keyboard designs.
One popular ergonomic style is split mechanical keyboards. Keyboards with this feature actually physically separate in the middle so that you can place one half on each side under your hands. The thought of using a keyboard that’s split in half may be awkward to those who haven’t done it before, but it is ergonomically designed to put your wrists in a more natural position.
● Keyboard Customization and Shortcuts
Depending on how advanced of a mechanical keyboard user you become, you may decide you want to play around with customizing the key commands. While non-mechanical keyboards aren’t able to do this, many mechanical ones give the user the ability to change around what keys do.
There are also mechanical keyboards that have backlighting. All of these allow you to change the colors up on the backlighting which can be fun to do and help you match your aesthetic.
● Construction of The Frame and Keycaps
The frame of mechanical keyboards is what holds everything together. Keyboard frames are commonly made from either plastic or metal. More importantly, frames have different profiles that affect the design of the keyboard. Frames with a higher profile will make the keys flush seem almost flush with the frame. On the other end, frames with lower profiles allow the keys to be almost on top of the frame.
The type of keyboard frame you choose depends largely on the typing experience you want, as with a lot of the other features. You may also want to look at the type of keycaps that a keyboard has. Keycaps are made from different types of plastic that can have a very different feel on the fingertips.

When you really get into gaming, your mechanical keyboard becomes your best friend and makes a big difference in how you perform in the game. In addition to a smooth, fast playing experience, gamers often seek out keyboards that are extra durable to withstand wear from heavier use.
● Programmers and Tech Roles Typing Up the Future
Ergonomic keyboards are a lifesaver for people who work in tech and programming jobs. Computer programmers spend their time writing and editing code at the computer. That kind of work can put lot of strain on the wrists and affect your sitting picture.
Similar to gamers, programmers make use of the split style mechanical keyboard. Once you’ve adapted to that style of typing, split keyboards allow for a natural v-style posture when sitting. People working with code and databases also receive help from quick access to keys on full size mechanical keyboard models.
These ergonomic mechanical keyboards are designed with coders and programmers in mind. Not only do they offer the comfort and durability that make using the computer a much more enjoyable experience, mechanical keyboards can also be customized to different degrees. Programmers may decide to create a layout with shortcuts for commands that they use often.
