What is the Internet?

The Internet is a vast global network that connects millions of computers, people, and other devices from around the world. It allows us to access information from anywhere in the world, send messages instantly, and interact with each other online.

How does the Internet work?

The Internet works by connecting networks together through a series of routers and switches. A router forwards packets of data between different networks while a switch links devices within a single network. This enables computers to communicate with each other and access content stored on remote servers.

What are websites?

Websites are essentially digital documents or files stored on web servers which can be accessed via the Internet by typing in an address (URL) into a web browser. They generally include text, images, videos and interactive elements; this makes them ideal for sharing information and providing services to users without having to install any additional software.

What is a web browser?

A web browser is essentially an application which provides an interface for users to view documents stored on web servers; it’s what we use when navigating around websites, downloading files and generally using the Internet. Popular examples include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari and Edge.

Why do we need search engines?

Search engines act as navigational tools for finding information on the Internet; they help us locate articles and websites related to our search query quickly by searching through billions of pages and presenting relevant results back to us within seconds! Without search engines it would be much harder (if not impossible) to find what we’re looking for online.

What is the difference between an Internet service provider and a Web host?

An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that provides access to the Internet, usually in exchange for a fee. A web host, on the other hand, is a company that provides storage space and services such as website development and maintenance; they’re also responsible for making sure websites are accessible online.

What is domain name resolution?

Domain Name Resolution (DNS) is the process of mapping domain names (e.g., google.com) to their corresponding IP addresses (e.g.,172.217.24.238). DNS works by referring requests to specific nameservers which then resolve them back into domain names so computers can access content stored online.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small pieces of data stored on your computer each time you visit a website or use an application; this allows websites to remember your preferences or track your actions across multiple visits over time. They’re not necessarily malicious but can be used to gather personal information if misused or abused – something which makes them controversial.

How do I secure my computer from cyber security threats?

To secure your computer from cyber security threats starts with installing and regularly updating anti-virus software; this protects against malware, viruses and other malicious attacks. Additionally, you should be mindful about what you click on and download, create strong passwords and avoid public Wi-Fi whenever possible.

What are some of the negative impacts of using the Internet that I should be aware of?

The Internet can be great but there are some potential negative impacts such as cyber bullying or harassment, trolling/hate speech, identity theft and fraud, data privacy concerns etc. Of course, it’s important to stay safe and protect yourself by taking the necessary steps (mentioned above) but ultimately it comes down to being aware and exercising good judgement when using the Internet.

What is network layer security?

Network layer security is a type of network security which protects networks from malicious attacks that may enter from within or outside the network. It works by implementing various techniques such as encryption, authentication and access control in order to protect data and maintain privacy.

Why should I use Virtual Private Network (VPN)?

The benefits of using a VPN include increased privacy and anonymity online, improved security against cyber threats such as hackers and malicious software, and access to content that may not be available due to regional restrictions (e.g., streaming services). It also hides your IP address, making it difficult for third parties to track your activity online.

How can I protect myself against online fraud?

There are several steps you can take to protect yourself against online fraud. These include only using websites with secure connections (https://); staying alert and paying attention to website URLs; never disclosing credit card information unless absolutely necessary; and avoiding clicking on suspicious links or attachments sent via email/messages. Additionally, it’s wise to stay informed about the latest scams and phishing techniques used by hackers and scammers – after all, knowledge is power.

What is phishing and how can I spot it?

Phishing is a form of cyber-attack where attackers attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords or financial data by disguising themselves as legitimate sources. Signs of phishing include emails written in poor English with spelling mistakes, requests for personal data/financial information, strange URL links etc. By being aware of this you can spot potential scams quickly and avoid becoming a victim.

What are Malware protection measures?

Malware protection measures involve taking steps to guard against malware infections or detect any existing ones before they cause major disruption. Examples include running anti-malware software regularly; making sure your operating system is up-to-date with the latest patches; scanning removable media like USB drives before connecting them; and maintaining strong passwords across all accounts.

What was the first Internet protocol?

The first Internet protocol was called the Network Control Program (NCP) and was introduced in 1969 by Jon Postel. It was designed as a basic communication protocol for computers connected to ARPANET – the precursor of today’s Internet. NCP allowed computers to transfer data, talk to other nodes and eventually be used to establish connections with remote networks.

Who invented the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web (WWW) was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 while he worked at CERN. He came up with some ingenious concepts and technologies such as HTML, hypertext and URLs which combined together allow us to access content across multiple devices and locations worldwide. To this day his original vision has made an ongoing impact on how we interact with each other online.

How has the Internet changed over time?

The Internet has changed drastically over time from its early days as a research tool for universities and governments to its current state as an integral part of our everyday lives. This includes faster download speeds; increased security measures; more sophisticated applications; better connectivity options like 4G or 5G; and countless new digital services ranging from streaming services and online shopping to social media platforms etc.
