There may be no sweeter words for a PC enthusiast than "Build your own laptop" and "Starting price."

Many laptop buyers – from deal hunters to tech geeks – reject pre-defined, pre-priced systems. Instead they choose a favorite model – ThinkPad X1 Carbon or IdeaPad S940, for instance – and customize it by selecting from lists of processor, graphics, RAM and other options. The base price changes with each new component and feature. The buyer decides the final cost and configuration.

Ultimate flexibility. Ultimate control. It's like buying a car used to be. Whether you want a stripped-down workstation or a souped-up gaming rig, these build-your-own-Lenovo-laptop options are a great place to start. There's nothing like a custom Lenovo laptop.

How can I build my own Lenovo laptop?

Depending on the base model you choose, you'll get multiple options for customizations and upgrades. On some models, it's the processor, operating system and RAM. On other models, you can't change the CPU but can change the display resolution, graphics card, and other components.

Ready to create your customized Lenovo laptop? Options will vary, but here are some of the typical components and features that may be modifiable when you click the big "Customize and buy" button:

  • Processor: Jump from, say, an Intel® Core® i5 CPU to an Intel Core i7 (or vice-versa).
  • Operating system: Do you prefer Microsoft® Windows® 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro?
  • Memory: Need lots of RAM? Upgrade your new system to 16 GB or 32 GB.
  • Storage drive: Choose a regular HDD or fast, light SSD, in sizes up to 1 TB.
  • Second storage drive: Dual-drive systems may let you configure the second drive, too.
  • Display type: Some models let you jump from Full HD to QHD, UHD or 4K.
  • Graphics card: Gamers and video pros may opt for a better, faster GPU.

Some components are occasionally, but not always configurable. These include the keyboard, camera, battery, power adapter and wireless. Pay attention to the options you’re presented.
