Water and Waste
We aim to build water resiliency and to practice waste minimization, reuse, and recycling. To support these objectives, we are focused on increasing our understanding of water- and waste-related risks and being transparent in these areas by continuing to measure, analyze, and disclose our performance and improvement efforts.

The majority of our water withdrawals are sourced from third-parties and the majority of our wastewater is returned to third-parties for treatment and disposal. Because Lenovo’s manufacturing and development operations have minimal wet processes, our primary direct water use is for employee consumption and sanitation.
We monitor our water withdrawals and wastewater discharge and have this data annually verified by a third-party. Our most recent water verification statement can be found here. The chart below shows our global water withdrawal and wastewater discharge volumes for the past five fiscal years.

In addition to maintaining operational control of our water use, we are striving for improved water resiliency. We have a corporate Water Resiliency Policy to guide our efforts in this area. We perform an annual water risk mapping exercise. We are currently working to refine our risk mapping and expand it to more of our supply chain.
Product Water Footprint
In 2015, Lenovo participated in a pilot water footprint evaluation for Lenovo’s flagship all-in-one product. The pilot evaluation of the ThinkCentre X1 was a preliminary step in evaluating where the largest water use occurs in our product life cycle. The process improved our understanding of our water impacts and dependencies beyond our direct operations and helped us evaluate areas for future focus. Our day to day operations around the globe generate nonhazardous waste and minimal quantities of hazardous waste. Our nonhazardous waste includes typical office and cafeteria waste as well as packaging and manufacturing scrape at our manufacturing locations. Our hazardous waste includes oils, coolants, organic solvents, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts.

One of Lenovo’s our primary environmental objectives for operational facilities involves is to minimizeing solid the waste we generate and maximize ing recycling and reuse within our operations. To support this, we set a target to reuse or recycle at least 85 percent of our operational nonhazardous waste. During FY19/20, we achieved an overall nonhazardous waste reuse/recycling rate of 88.6 percent. For more information on our waste management, please see our most recent ESG Report.
We do not release significant amounts of other emissions. Lenovo prohibits the use of ozone-depleting substances in our products and manufacturing process1 and does not have significant direct air emissions such as NOx, SOx, or volatile organic compounds (VOCs)2. Lenovo does not intentionally release any untreated wastewater other than to third parties for treatment and disposal. During the FY19/20, there were no significant accidental releases of wastewater, fuel, chemicals or other potentially harmful substances at Lenovo facilities3.
1Our only use of ozone-depleting substances is in HVAC and fire-suppression equipment as permitted by law. They are managed in accordance with local requirements and intentional releases are prohibited.
2Household and cleaning products that contain small quantities of VOCs are used at some of our facilities, but associated fugitive emissions are minimal and are not quantified. 3There was one insignificant accidental release of fuel during FY19/20. Half a liter of fuel was accidently released onto a paved parking lot at our facility in Essen, Germany. The release was contained and captured without offsite impacts.
