Officially, the US federal holiday is still called Washington’s Birthday, the name Congress gave it in 1879, when a yearly observance honoring the “Father of the Country” was first enacted. So where does “Presidents Day” come from? While the term is now used colloquially around the country, its origins can be traced mostly to the proximity of the Washington event to additional, state-level holidays honoring another US president, Abraham Lincoln. Over the years, numerous individual US states created their own holidays to mark Lincoln’s birthday on February 12. So when the federal calendar was modernized to emphasize Monday observances, many (but not all) states moved to merge their two February holidays into a single event aligned with the national schedule. Some states (but, again, not all) even renamed the event Presidents Day.

Today, whether your state calls it Presidents Day, Washington’s Birthday, Washington-Lincoln Day or something else, the third Monday in February is accepted as a time to honor all great presidents, with special focus on Washington and Lincoln.
