The ThinkPad X1 Carbon incorporates an innovative new “Super Magnesium” alloy in its hybrid cover that utilizes rare earth elements. The alloy prevents the growth of magnesium crystals during manufacturing, allowing the material to be both thinner and lighter. By switching to this material, the X1 Carbon achieves a combined weight reduction of 39 grams across the C & D covers, compared with the normal magnesium used in the previous generation X1 Carbon.
The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is incredibly tough too, utilising satellite grade carbon fiber that’s stronger than the materials used to manufacturer airplanes and wind turbines. Four layers of carbon fiber reinforced plastic form the top cover structure, including a thermoplastic core layer that absorbs shocks.
Tested to military specifications
The ThinkPad X1 Carbon leads the way in meeting testing standards set by the US Department of Defense. Mil-STD-810G tests devices in a range of extreme environmental conditions, including temperature, pressure, dust, humidity and vibration. The tests are designed to provide a rigorous examination of each device, with different parameters and scenarios for each test. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is expected to be the market leader in adherence to Mil-Spec in 2016.
High-speed PCIe NVMe SSD
Connecting to peripheral devices is easier and faster than ever with the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. With up to 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon delivers high-speed performance that’s 20% faster than PCIe SSD and twice as fast as standard SSD access.
New paint material
The ThinkPad X1 Carbon introduces a durable new anti-sweat paint material as one component of the hybrid design C cover. The new paint dramatically improves heat deformation, reducing the baking temperature to around 70°C and ensuring the material is viable for mass production.
