Secure Managed Client
Lenovo's Secure Managed Client (SMC) is a game changing alternative desktop solution that utilizes a disk-less ThinkCentre® client with INTEL® vPRO Technology, a Lenovo co-developed software stack and a centralized Intel powered Lenovo Storage Array. Although SMC comes with all the benefits of an alternative desktop solution, including free seating, it accomplishes this without sacrificing end-users experience, graphic performance or the number of desktop options available.
SMC can be deployed to departments or rolled out company wide. It is designed to minimize TCO and deliver a quick ROI by eliminating the need for desk side support as well as lowering the installation, moving, adding, changing (IMAC), deployment and energy costs. The solution is storage based and offers a wide array of tools for end-user, image, IT and business management. The built-in, IT-oriented, business reports deliver weekly company-wide reports of end-user experience, client, network and printing performance.

SMC Key Strengths vs. Alternative Client Solutions
Although Lenovo's Secure Managed Client is an alternative client solution, it does not have the limitation of similar solutions. From an end-users perspective the SMC client is a standard PC, but from a CEO and CFO perspective, it delivers the cost savings, centralized management and data security that you would expect from any other Alternative Client Solution. Below are a few of the additional benefits of Lenovo's Secure Managed Client versus current alternative desktop solutions:
SMC preserves the fidelity of the PC.
Users expect PCs to support all of their audio requirements, video formats and compatibility of their peripheral devices. While other solutions in this category of products struggle with this, SMC does not.
SMC avoids IT complexity.
While other alternative desktop solutions introduce complexity that create duplicate images, unique software updates, mixed IT processes, and the like, SMC avoids this bubble of complexity associated with other solutions.
SMC is a safe and flexible investment.
Lenovo's SMC uses a standard ThinkCentre VPro desktop with a remote storage device. This allows a company to standardize on one type of client for both their standard PC and SMC users, resulting in flexibility to use it as a PC and then provision it into an SMC device, or the reverse. SMC enables the investment to be reused, which is unique compared to other solutions.
SMC is energy efficiency.
An SMC client has no HDD allowing an SMC based computing solution to use less energy than a traditional PC. In addition, the back-end Storage Array uses energy more efficiently. Compared to others, SMC is as complete solution very energy effective.
SMC costs less to implement.
SMC uses a cost effective network appliance as storage and does not require costly back end servers, software licenses or staff needed to support these. It also takes shorter time to implement and integrate due to its simplicity.

Secure Managed Client Solution Overview
The Lenovo Secure Managed Client (SMC) provides the fidelity and flexibility of a Windows PC. It uses unmodified, off-the-shelf, Windows applications, IT applications and PC add-ons. It coexists and integrates directly with existing IT, assets, process management and financial systems. |

The Client
The Secure Managed Client utilizes disk or disk-less ThinkCentre M58p clients. The solution is also backwards compatible with selected models of ThinkCentre M57p USSF. The disk-less ThinkCentre client comes with a Microsoft Windows license and the solution supports standard versions of Microsoft Windows Vista and XP, standard Windows applications as well as PC options designed to be used with the Lenovo ThinkCentre PC's.
To maximize the investment, the SMC client requires the following memory configuration:
- Windows XP system 1GB (Recommended 2GB)
- Microsoft Windows Vista system 2GB (Recommended 3GB)

The Storage
The Lenovo Storage Array is a network appliance specially designed and configured to be a cost effective storage solution for the SMC clients. One Lenovo Storage Array supports up to 100 concurrent users, which are centrally managed from the SMC management console regardless if it is installed close to the end-users or in a centralized data center.
The storage arrays has six 1GB Ethernet ports and comes in the following three configurations:
- 6 Ethernet ports
- 6, 9 or 12TB of raw data space

Centralized Management
Lenovo's SMC Management Software is used to centrally manage all SMC users, images and the Storage Array. Lenovo's SMC Management Software is used with PC Management software that customers already own, or a customer can elect to use the optional SMC PC Windows management features that come with the product. The license for the software is available per client as a low cost subscription or standard purchase. |

Lenovo's SMC Management Software is available in 2 configurations:
- SMC Workgroup License
Includes tools for managing SMC users, images and Lenovo Storage Array Provisioning, as well as SMC inventory, vPRO management, report generator and Storage Array alerts. It also includes an optional SMC Windows Management feature using similar technology found in LANDesk Management Suite for ThinkVantage Technologies.
- SMC Enterprise License
Includes the workgroup function as an additional network, application and port management based on the LANDesk Security Suite. This includes integrated windows and application patch management, capability to white/black list USB devices and applications, as well as tools for removal of malware.

Lenovo Professional Services are designed to help you realize your SMC cost savings and ROI faster and includes everything from assistance with SMC prototypes, to assistance with managing the complete deployment.
