IBM UNVEILS THE WORLD’S SMALLEST DESKTOP

NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 11, 2004 :IBM India, today announced the launch of the world’s smallest full functional desktop PC, the new ThinkCentre S50 ultra small. Weighing as light as 5.9kg and a footprint smaller than numerous notebook PCs, the new ThinkCentre S50 saves space without compromising on any function.

Its release marks an aggressive new move by IBM in the desktop arena. The ThinkCentre S50 ultra small includes IBM’s patented Think Vantage Technologies, which help reduce system-operating costs and improves employee productivity as well.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Neeraj Sharma, Vice President, Personal Computing Division, IBM India, said, "We have demonstrated that we are focused on delivering the best of products and services to our customers over the years. Our goal has always been to meet varied needs of our desktop customers”, he said. “Considering the fact that office space is shrinking in nearly every industry, IBM is changing the way we view desktop PCs. IBM continues to innovate on the desktop and to develop industry-leading Think Vantage Technologies, reducing lifecycle costs and simplifying the overall PC ownership experience”, he added.

Featuring IBM ThinkVantage Design, the S50 ultra small is encased in a tool-free durable steel chassis that provides a sturdy pedestal for any desktop monitor. The customer can easily remove all components inside the machine, such as the hard disk and memory.

Companies with space-saving environments that demand high-performance desktops, such as finance and health care companies, will benefit most from the small footprint of the S50 ultra small, which measures 28cm wide by 26cm deep by 8.4cm high (or four tennis balls x 1.3 tennis balls x one standard coffee mug).

The ThinkCentre S50 ultra small, is 35 percent smaller than the current IBM ThinkCentre S50. Its footprint is actually 8 percent smaller than a ThinkPad T41 notebook computer. At about 5.9kg, the new ThinkCentre S50 ultra small weighs almost the same as IBM's first notebook computer, the 5.4kg IBM 5140 PC Convertible launched in 1986.

The ThinkCentre S50 ultra small features numerous IBM ThinkVantage Technologies, which improve security and simplify PC fleet management. like

Full desktop functionality: The ThinkCentre S50 ultra small features an internal power supply, one PCI slot, one slim-line optical drive slot, one 3.5" internal hard drive, and Intel Pro-1000 Ethernet. It also features an innovative "caddy" that surrounds the hard disk drive, locking it into place without the use of tools or screws. Rubber bumpers on the caddy decrease vibration and deliver quiet operation.

It is also IBM's quietest desktop PC ever. An animated illustration of the IBM ThinkCentre S50 ultra small is available at www.ibm.com/thinkcentre/smallest
