Room 208 is a magical place. Visitors here are time-travelers, exploring Victorian London through the eyes of a Dickensian character. They are eyewitnesses, hearing the firsthand account of a Holocaust survivor. They are literary critics, corresponding with the author of their favorite book. Most of all, they are students. They are Internet users. The development of the Internet has opened the world, past, present, and future, to the average person. There is a boundless amount of opportunity on the Internet, creating a new type of student. This generation is simply not content to be told what they need to know by their teachers. They need to experience history for themselves, see the wonders of science, and hear the rhythm of the great poets. Past generations were often lectured to about what to expect in “the real world.” Through the Internet, today’s students have already become active participants in “the real world.” Based on the ideas being created now by this Internet savvy generation, I can only imagine what wonders our future reality will hold. Is Room 208 truly a magical place? It’s just your average classroom, four walls…a chalkboard…oh, and an Internet connection. That is where the real magic begins.
