Management tips for mobile devices

While the practice of both using mobile devices and managing them may be specific to individual organizations, learning from others is a good way for a company to lay down an effective foundation. Tablet computers and other devices require close oversight to ensure they are used securely and effectively.

Computerworld has gathered mobile device management tips from comments made by industry insiders at the CITE conference in San Francisco.

Hyatt Hotels CIO Dave Malcom says his company has devised a five-page policy with provisions for appropriate access and data security, among other areas. Hyatt also takes into account the implications of allowing employees to use personally owned tablets and smartphones to connect to the enterprise network and access corporate data.

Computerworld adds that companies should require the encryption of devices and data, think about remote lock and wipe capabilities and consider the benefits of deploying mobile cloud computing solutions.

InfoWorld also highlights several tips for shifting to a bring-your-own-device or consumerized mobile environment. For one, companies should embrace consumer tablets and smartphones within a tech environment, as well as focus on policy-based governance practices.
