Firefox 6 now available for Android tablets

Continuing to adhere to its rapid-fire update cycle, Mozilla recently released the latest installment of its Firefox web browser for download.

This is the third major Firefox update since March of this year. As usual, Mozilla's Firefox 6 is available for personal computers. But this time around, the nonprofit has also optimized its free web browser for Android-based smartphones and tablet computers.

"Firefox for Android provides a seamless way for users to take the Firefox experience they know and love everywhere, along with a sleek look that allows users to focus on the websites they visit," Mozilla states on its official blog.

Mozilla notes that it has introduced a new web browser interface that is compatible with the unique design of tablets. Back and forward buttons, for example, have been moved to a side panel of the browser, rather than the top.

The company states that Firefox for Android has also been optimized for the touch and gesture capabilities. This will enable tablet users to interact with the browser by simply swiping their fingers or pinching to zoom in and out.

Recognizing the impending growth of Android in the tablet market, more businesses are releasing offerings that cater to the mobile operating system. As a recent ABI Research report points out, Android has captured 20 percent of the tablet market in the last year.
